Many years ago, I actually tripped over a
huge, bizarre poster print at the Stuy Town flea market.
The painting depicted The United Nations building
with a skyscraper-sized Jesus figure standing nearby.
He seems to be "knocking" on the U.N. and wants in.
Attack of the 800 Foot Holy Dude.
Like a fool, I didn't buy the poster.
I was en route to a wedding, and didn't want to tote a 36"x24" Jesus.
And yeah, I didn't want to have to explain to anyone why I'd buy it.
Another missed kitsch opportunity. Another complete obsession.
And eBay wasn't invented yet.
Mercifully, my itch got scratched a year later
when I was able to get a copy of the print.
But I still wondered about Harry Anderson,
the artist behind the Super-Sized Christ.
I googled him recently, and the first picture that loaded
was another religious theme--a (normal size) Jesus showing
several small children his stigmata,
titled
"What Did They Do To Your Hand?"
Once again, I wasn't sure if this guy was kidding.
So I did some more digging and uncovered
a small stash of Harry's other works.
And no, I don't think he's kidding.
Odd, yes. Some of my favorite things tend to be.
I do admire his imagination, technique and wonderful details.
His non-religious illustrations are also quite unusual.
I hope you enjoy them, and wonder in awe at these pieces like I do.
